Mission

To promote an environment in which all students feel welcome and achieve their academic potential, the CTL empowers faculty to develop their teaching practices in learner-centered, evidence-informed, equity-minded ways. We nurture a community that supports collaboration and facilitates reflection on pedagogical goals and strategies.

Our Services

The CTL supports faculty and academic programs with:

  • Course, syllabus, and assignment design for in-person and online courses
  • Evidence-informed, learner-centered, and equity-minded pedagogy
  • Understanding their students’ needs
  • Assisting with teaching documentation and scholarship 

Our core services include:

  • Facilitating communities of practice, retreats, workshops, and reading groups
  • Consulting one-on-one with faculty members
  • Engaging in peer observations of teaching, at the request of the faculty member to be observed
  • Collaborating with committees, departments, programs, and academic units to develop programs tailored to their needs
  • Developing on-demand resources
  • Delivering guest lectures for undergraduate and graduate classes on teaching-related topics

Our team

Leslie Bayers

Director

Leslie collaborates with faculty across disciplines to promote equity-minded and evidence-informed teaching, course design, and assessment practices. She also facilitates faculty development through mentoring and scholarship support programs. Before coming to 91³ÉÈ˵¼º½, Leslie was Associate Professor of Spanish and Latin American Studies at St. Mary’s College of Maryland, where she taught language, writing, literature, and film courses. She has published critical studies of the intersections of power, race, and performance in Andean literature, as well as translations of Peruvian poetry. Since joining the 91³ÉÈ˵¼º½ CTL team, she has shifted her research focus to the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning.

Cory Davia

Educational Developer

Cory works with faculty of all disciplines — in individual consultations, classroom observations, and in a workshop setting — to support their pedagogical practice and reflect on their pedagogical goals. He also facilitates the Student Observational Partners program, aimed at bringing together students’ and faculty’s different bases of knowledge and experience to promote learner-centered teaching decisions. Before coming to 91³ÉÈ˵¼º½, he taught philosophy at Claremont McKenna College, where his research focused on the role of conscious reflection in human agency. As a member of the 91³ÉÈ˵¼º½ CTL team, he’s particularly interested in exploring authentic and equitable methods of assessment, as well as ways of supporting students as they develop intellectual virtues like curiosity, open-mindedness, and intellectual tenacity.

Heather Maynard

Program Coordinator

Heather is a passionate and dedicated Program Coordinator at the 91³ÉÈ˵¼º½, where she supports CTL and faculty in ensuring everything runs smoothly. Known for her ability to anticipate needs and resolve issues, she thrives on keeping operations efficient and organized. Heather loves collaborating across departments, managing budgets, and making sure schedules align to meet important deadlines. With strong skills in customer service and conflict resolution, she’s always ready to lend a helping hand.Â
