McGeorge School of Law's Dean of Admissions forges pathways to law school for marginalized populations

Valerie D. James is helping the 91成人导航 McGeorge School of Law increase its commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging by recruiting and supporting a dynamic cohort of law students each year.听

James joined McGeorge as the Senior Assistant Dean of Admissions, Financial Aid, and Diversity Initiatives in 2022.听聽

Under James鈥 leadership, she and her have brought in record-setting cohorts of law students. For the second year in a row, In fact, 54.4% percent of students in the Class of 2026 are from marginalized populations, surpassing even last year鈥檚 cohort, which had from marginalized populations.听聽聽

This year鈥檚 incoming class set a record for the law school鈥檚 highest enrollment of students who identify as members of the LGBTQ+ community. This year, 27% of first-year JD students identify as LGBTQ+.听

To James, it is important to ensure everyone 鈥 including underserved communities 鈥 has access to legal services but also to a legal education.听

鈥淚n all things, I want to ensure every student has an educational experience that is engaging and transformative, so they are prepared to make an impact in their community,鈥 James said.听

James is a respected leader in higher education administration. She serves as co-advisor to McGeorge鈥檚 Black Law Students Association and oversees the Sacramento Campus鈥 . This month, James was installed as the Vice Chair of the聽Association of American Law Schools鈥 Section on Pre-Law Education and Admission to Law School. 聽

James was recognized in the 2023 91成人导航 Magazine as one of the "People of 91成人导航."
