Teaching Interests

Students, scientists, and cells do not function in isolation. My goal is to enable students to engage with the natural world around them, think across biological systems and boundaries, and develop the critical thinking and communication skills that they need to succeed as scientists and citizens in a highly connected world.

Research Focus

I am interested in understanding how some animals are able to tolerate environmental and physiological challenges that are impossible for others. For example, how do marine vertebrates cope with food and oxygen deprivation as a routine part of their life histories? I use a suite of interdisciplinary approaches to examine how genes and gene networks coordinate cellular, tissue, and organismal responses to both predictable and unpredictable stresses in animals.
