Providing On-Site Dental Care at Homeless Navigation Center in Redwood City

The Dugoni School is now operating a two-chair dental clinic to serve interim housing clients of the County of San Mateo's Homeless Navigation Center in Redwood City, CA. It provides no-cost preventive, restorative dental care and specialty care by dental students under faculty supervision.

On-Site Dental Care Now Available at Homeless Navigation Center

Redwood City 鈥 A permanent on-site dental clinic is now available five days a week to serve interim housing clients of the County of San Mateo's Homeless Navigation Center. the 240-unit facility, operated by LifeMoves, provides temporary housing, case management and access to the full range of health care, mental health and substance use services, social supports and other programs from the County and its partner agencies. Previously, dental care was available at the Navigation Center via weekly visits from San Mateo County Health's dental听听or by scheduling an appointment with a provider located elsewhere. Now, with the availability of on-site services during the week, accessing dental care at the Navigation Center is as easy as stepping into the courtyard.

The two-chair dental clinic is operated by the 91成人导航鈥檚 Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry. It provides no-cost preventive, restorative dental care and specialty care, including exams, cleanings, fillings and emergency treatment, along with oral surgery, endodontia, and periodontia, by dental students under faculty supervision and with the aid of a registered dental assistant.

With a capacity for 2,500 visits annually, the program is expected to treat up to 800 individuals a year.

With the addition of dental, the Navigation Center now houses two primary care facilities. A medical clinic, operated by Healthcare in Action, provides no-cost medical consultation and treatment to Navigation Center clients. A referral system allows clients entering one facility to be scheduled for treatment at the other, in addition to having access to other services and benefits, with the help of a case manager from LifeMoves.

Dental coverage is included as a Medi-Cal benefit in California. With preventive care, including regular cleanings, patients require fewer extractions and with a healthier mouth may see improvement in their quality of life. Studies have shown that the combination of health and dental coverage can result in a for dental visits. Regular preventive care can reduce overall dental costs compared to the treatment costs of patients with no preventive care, including for oral surgeries. There is even a .
